The wandering daughter of California’s famed first wolf made a pioneering trek into the Bay Area’s favorite mountain playground, extending the reach of the wild canines almost as far as the Sierra ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe.

Wildlife biologists tracked the 2-year-old wolf, known as OR-54, using her GPS collar, to within 1½ miles of the Boreal Mountain ski area, off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit, making her the first wild gray wolf confirmed in Nevada County in at least a century.

Durant des années, un biologiste a été payé par les autorités pour suivre ses faits et gestes, lui poser des colliers, compter ses portées et tenter de le protéger. Mais un jour, comme cela devait arriver, OR4 a enfreint une règle de trop. Une règle posée par les hommes.

St. Marks and St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge reports that power has been restored, and they are open and ready for visitors. We can assume that the red wolves are fine. St. Vincent is a wild barrier island, and the wolves run free, so it is not usual to see them on a regular basis.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has confirmed the first sighting of a wolf in the state in nearly 100 years.

Chief State Game Warden Brian Wakeling said Friday the wolf was spotted in northwest Nevada in early November near Fox Mountain just west of the Black Rock Desert and about 20 miles from the California line.
